(RALEIGH, N.C.) — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said on Friday that nearly 49,000 Medicaid cards with children’s personal information on them were sent to the wrong people.
According to ABC’s Raleigh affiliate, WTVD, the cards were sent out on New Year’s Eve. A county social services department informed the DHHS of the mistake.
The DHHS Medicaid Director Sandra Terrell said in a statement that the department “takes the privacy of Medicaid recipients very seriously and is working to put measures in place to monitor the use of affected Medicaid cards for potential fraud.” The department says that it is aware of which cards were sent to which addresses.
