(GARDEN CITY, N.Y.) — What some customers thought was gunfire inside a mall on New York’s Long Island was actually the sound of a shoplifter toppling an in-store display, according to police.

Nassau County Police said there were no shots fired at the Roosevelt Field Mall on Tuesday, despite reports to the contrary. A shoplifter who knocked over a display inside the Macy’s store, startling customers on this final shopping day before Christmas, was taken into custody, police said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Shoppers are on a heightened sense of alert following recent incidents at a pair of New Jersey malls.
