(NEW YORK) — Have you bought your “winning” Mega Millions lottery ticket yet? The drawing is Tuesday night.
When no winning ticket was sold in last Friday’s drawing, the jackpot rolled over to $550 million, and it jumped again on Monday to $586 million. The top prize could go up even more before Tuesday’s drawing.
The biggest Mega Millions jackpot in history was in March 2012, when three winning tickets for a $656 million jackpot were sold in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.
Mega Millions is played in 43 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
If no winning ticket is drawn on Tuesday, the jackpot for Friday will be around $800 million, according to one Lottery official. And if nobody buys the winning ticket on Friday, the jackpot could reach $1 billion by Christmas.
For those planning on beating odds of 1 in 259 million, Tuesday’s jackpot translates into a cash payout of $316.5 million.
