Brad Paisley and his wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, are opening up about an elaborate, cruel hoax that played on their generosity to a fictional dying girl. A woman, who said her name is Carrie, got in touch with Kimberly, saying her daughter, Claire, was dying of the pediatric cancer neuroblastoma The mother told Kimberly she’d forgotten about her daughter’s request to get in touch with the Paisleys, so it seemed very real.

Kimberly tells ABC’s Nightline, “That was kind of the beginning of the manipulation.”

Over the next few days, Kimberly and Claire exchanged emails, phone calls and texts. Kimberly even spoke with the girl and convinced Brad to call her and sing “Amazing Grace” to her.  “You’re singing to someone’s dying kid,” Brad says. “And in the middle of it, there’s no way that’s not real. How can that not be real?”

A few days later, Carrie called to say that Claire had died, but she refused to give an address so the Paisleys could send flowers to the funeral. That’s when Kimberly knew something was awry. It turns out the photo Carrie passed off as her sick daughter was taken from the blog of a real girl in Southern California who had neuroblastoma.

Brad says, “That’s the sickest part about this to me. That is the part that when I start to talk about that, that’s when I get really mad. That there were real kids, that there were real photos involved.”

Nightline tracked down the woman posing as the mother of the sick girl. See what they found out when the show airs tonight at 12:35 a.m. ET on ABC.
