Country fans are familiar with the hit songs Brandy Clark has written, including Miranda Lambert‘s latest chart-topper “Mama’s Broken Heart” and The Band Perry‘s “Better Dig Two.” Now Brandy is stepping out with an album of her own, 12 Stories, currently in stores and online.

The songs Brandy chose to record celebrate her love of characters, so every track on the album tells a story about a particular scene in a person’s life.  At first, Brandy set out to make 12 Stories a full-blown concept album telling one overarching story.

She tells ABC News Radio, “It was either gonna be the day in the life of one woman, or the length of a relationship. So, we thought about starting it with ‘Illegitimate Children’ and ending it with ‘The Day She Got Divorced.’  That’s not what we did, but the songs were chosen based on that.”

Based on those song titles, it’s clear Brandy doesn’t shy away from writing about difficult topics. “Illegitimate Children” is all about the drunken mistakes that lead to unexpected pregnancy while “The Day She Got Divorced” tells the story of a woman as she heads to the courthouse to end her dead marriage.

The brutal honesty of Brandy’s songs has earned her mentions in Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Weekly. Brandy has a feeling her music will continue to build an audience through word of mouth, too.

“I just hope there’s a place for real adult music about real things, about being conflicted,” Brandy says.

In addition to the release of 12 Stories, Brandy is also gearing up to attend the 47th Annual CMA Awards as a nominee November 6 in Nashville. She’s nominated in the Song of the Year category as a co-writer of “Mama’s Broken Heart.”  The CMA Awards broadcast live that night at 8 ET on ABC.

Here’s the 12 Stories track listing:

“Pray to Jesus”
“Crazy Women”
“What Will Keep Me Out of Heaven”
“Get High”
“Hold My Hand”
“In Some Corner”
“Take a Little Pill”
