A new album from Randy Travis, Influence Vol. 1: The Man I Am, finds the country star paying tribute to his musical heroes Merle Haggard, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Lefty Frizell and Ernest Tubb among others. Though some of the tracks are hits by those artists, Randy dips deeper into Merle’s catalog offering his take on Haggard’s covers of Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong songs from the ’20s and ’30s.
“When I think of my musical heroes of yesteryear, or the younger stars of this year, I am reminded that it is true we learn from the ones ahead of us, and teach the ones that follow,” Randy says. “They are the reason I chose to make this album.”
Influence Vol. 1: The Man I Am also includes Randy’s collaboration with Joe Nichols on the George Jones tribute song, “Tonight I’m Playing Possum.”
Randy’s new album is out October 1. He was hospitalized last month for a heart condition and a stroke and has been recovering at a physical therapy facility.
