(PORTLAND, Ore.) — Rescue crews will resume searching for a snowboarder buried under a collapsed ice tunnel at about 7 a.m. on Sunday. Five other snowboarders from the group are safe and accounted for.
According to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office, the person was buried after a localized avalanche on Saturday afternoon. Rescue crews worked into the night on Saturday to attempt to reach the snowboarder, but were unsuccessful.
Tiffany Peterson from the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News Radio that the Sunday morning search will be considered a recovery effort.
Teams hope to locate the body of the victim under a school bus-sized heap of fallen ice.
