(TAVERES, Fla.) — Several large propane tanks exploded late Monday night at a gas plant in Tavares, Fla., sending large flames and smoke into the sky.
The tanks began exploding around 11 p.m. at the Blue Rhino gas plant in Lake County, according to ABC News affiliate WFTV.
Ashley McCormick lives in neighboring Mount Dora, Fla., and told ABC News over the phone she could see the fire from seven miles away.
“We’ve probably heard close to 100 or more [explosions]. I mean there are hundreds of propane tanks out there,” she said. “You could hear the explosions just…one after another and then after it would explode, a fireball would shoot up into the sky.”
A city official told the Orlando Sentinel that 24 people were working the night shift at the plant when the explosions began. Fifteen people are unaccounted for, authorities say.
