(WASHINGTON) — The U.S. has delayed the shipment of four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt over concerns about the ongoing situation there.

Just two weeks ago, the Pentagon said they were continuing with the delivery of the aircraft.  Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told Pentagon reporters Wednesday, “Given the current situation in Egypt we don’t believe it is appropriate at this time to proceed with the delivery of F-16s to Egypt.”

Little said the U.S. would continue its broad military relationship with Egypt.

According to Little, the delayed delivery is not related to the ongoing administration determination of whether a coup had taken place in Egypt, which would lead to a cutoff of U.S. military aid.

“The decision to delay doesn’t necessarily reflect the outcome of that process,” said Little.  He described the situation in Egypt as “fluid,” adding, “we think it’s prudent at this stage to delay the F-16 delivery.”
The four jets are among 20 F-16s that Egypt has purchased from Lockheed Martin, being delivered in stages this year.
