(NEW YORK) — FBI agents are investigating the apparent disappearance of $1.2 million in cash from the cargo container of a Swiss Air Lines jet that landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, the agency said.
“When it got here, the money was missing,” FBI spokesman Jim Margolin said.
Police and investigators say they believe the cargo container had not been tampered with, suggesting that the money was stolen before the flight to New York City.
A Port Authority official confirmed that it was “an active investigation.” The agency, which runs New York’s airports, had no comment.
Airline spokeswoman Susanne Mühlemann told ABC News Tuesday morning, “Due to ongoing investigations, we cannot give any confirmation or comment.”
The airline declined to specify on which flight the money was supposed to arrive. The airline runs three flights to JFK daily: two from Zurich and one from Geneva.
