(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) — Gusty winds and hot, dry conditions are hampering efforts to battle multiple wildfires in Colorado.

The worst is the Black Forrest fire, northeast of Colorado Springs, which officials say has destroyed hundreds of homes.

“We have right now 360 homes that are complete losses.  In addition to that, we have 79 addresses that we could not verify,” El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said Thursday.

The sheriff said the number of acres burned has nearly doubled from Wednesday.

“Right now we’re estimating the acreage that has burned around 15,000 acres.  Yesterday, when we gave an update, we were around 8,500,” Maketa said.

The growing flames have forced thousands to evacuate.

“The evacuation area covers over 94,000 acres.  It’s a population of 38,000 people and it impacts about 13,000 homes,” he said.
