(BISMARCK, N.D.) — North Dakota is now the state with the most restrictive abortion laws in the U.S.

Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple signed into law three bills on Tuesday, including one that would make abortions illegal as early as six weeks after conception.

This particular law forbids abortion providers to terminate pregnancies once a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Meanwhile, Dalrymple also gave his seal of approval to a bill that outlaws genetic abnormalities and gender selection as sole reasons to seek abortions.  North Dakota is now the first state with the genetic abnormalities provision.

The third bill signed by Dalrymple says any doctor who performs abortions must have staff privileges at a nearby hospital.

On top of this, the GOP Legislature approved a referendum on a constitutional amendment to appear on November’s ballot that would protect life at every stage of development.

Pro-abortion advocates are expected to mount court challenges to the three new laws and fight passage of the referendum.
