(NEW YORK) — A young Jewish Orthodox couple was killed early Sunday morning in New York City while in the back of a cab on their way to deliver their first child.
The baby boy was delivered by emergency C-section and listed in serious condition. Authorities say the baby boy is premature, but is expected to survive.
According to authorities, Nathan and Raizy Glauber, both 21, were in the back of the cab around 12:30 a.m. when it was struck by a BMW at an intersection in Brooklyn.
The New York Daily News reports that it’s not clear if the cab driver stopped for a stop sign. The newspaper says the BMW did not have a stop sign at the intersection. Police say the driver of the BMW and a passenger abandoned the car after the crash and fled on foot.
The impact of the collision ejected Raizy Glauber from the vehicle, and the pregnant woman was found underneath a parked tractor-trailer.
The couple was buried in separate funeral services on Sunday afternoon.
Relatives of the couple will now raise the infant. The baby will be named after his dead father.
