Darius Rucker‘s new single, “Wagon Wheel,” is a cover of Old Crow Medicine Show‘s most notable hit. The song has been a staple of bands at frat parties and Nashville honky tonks for years now, but it took an interesting scenario for Darius to perk up and actually listen to it.
“I’m at my daughter’s high school talent show, and I’m sitting in the audience with my family,” Darius explains. “We were watching my daughter, and the faculty band gets up. It’s just the faculty from her school, and they play ‘Wagon Wheel.'”
Darius freaked out over the song and told his wife he was going to record the song before they finished it. He also sent a text message to his producer Frank Rogers about the song, but Frank had a word of warning about “Wagon Wheel.”
Darius says, “He said, ‘A lot of people have cut it.’ I said, ‘I don’t care! I’m cutting it!'”
Darius’s version of “Wagon Wheel” features his pals Lady Antebellum on background vocals. It will be included on his new album, True Believers, due out later this year.
