Taylor Swift‘s Red is officially the best-selling album released in 2012. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Taylor’s effort sold 3.11 million albums in the 2012 calendar year to come in second behind Adele‘s 21, which was released in 2011. That set sold 4.41 million albums in 2012 alone.
Country music figured well in the official year-end chart, with Carrie Underwood‘s Blown Away coming in at #7 with 1.2 million copies sold. Luke Bryan is at #8 with tailgates & tanlines moving 1.1. million copies. Lionel Richie‘s country duets project Tuskegee is #9 with 1.07 million copies sold, and Jason Aldean‘s Night Train is #10 selling 1.02 million copies this past year.
In other Taylor Swift chart news, her single, “I Knew You Were Trouble,” was the biggest-selling digital single last week, moving 582,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Some 55.74 million digital songs were sold last week, making it the single-largest week for download song sales ever. The record-breaking numbers were spurred by people using the gift cards they got for Christmas.
Taylor’s album, Red, is also spending a seventh non-consecutive week at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.
