Grace Potter is one of the artists sharing their thoughts on Johnny Cash in the new six-part Ovation series Song by Song: Johnny Cash. Merle Haggard, Josh Thompson, Tom Petty and Shooter Jennings are among the other artists helping tell Cash’s story through his songs. Each episode takes a deeper look at his hits like “Ring of Fire” and “A Boy Named Sue” and gives an intimate look at Cash in the process.
Grace tells ABC News Radio, “Ovation did a great job of editing together not just the songs and where he was when he recorded them, or who was producing them, but also what was happening in his life — where his story stops and starts.”
She adds, “I feel like he was one of those rare musicians who really encapsulated his life into his music so well.”
Grace grew up idolizing Johnny, and she even had a poster of him flipping the bird to the camera in her college dorm room.
She says of Cash’s music, “It started me on a trail as a songwriter of kind of having those moments a lot when I was writing songs going, ‘What would Johnny do?’ So yeah, he’s just always been a big part of my life.”
All six parts of Song by Song: Johnny Cash air Sunday night starting at 6 ET on Ovation.
