Taylor Swift‘s new song “Ronan” was inspired by 3-year-old Ronan Thompson, who died of cancer last year. His mother Maya Thompson started a blog about Ronan’s battle, and Taylor was inspired to write the song based on what Maya had written there.

Maya tells the New York Daily News, “It’s really amazing. All the details that she got from reading my story. She knew the most intimate things.”

Taylor called Maya to tell her she would be performing the song on the Stand Up to Cancer special last Friday. Even so, Maya didn’t hear the song until Taylor performed it on the show.

“It was very emotional, a lot of tears,” Maya says. “I had a hard time focusing on the words that were coming out of her mouth, because I was focusing on the emotion in her face. You could see the sadness, and how touched she was.”

Taylor and Maya met at one of Taylor’s shows in Phoenix last year. “Ronan” is now available through iTunes, but it will not be included on her upcoming album, Red, due out October 22.

Taylor is in Brazil this week doing promotion for the international release of Red.
