Not only does Little Big Town‘s new CD feature their first chart-topper, it’s also their first with producer Jay Joyce.

He suggested Little Big Town try recording the project with their own band, rather than with studio musicians, which ultimately sped up the process.

“We rehearsed like four days, and we recorded those rehearsals at Jay’s studio. So, we had some stuff recorded there. We’d get the songs worked up kind of 80 percent there, and then go, ‘Okay.’ If the song came together really quick, we’d put it in the good pile and if it didn’t we’d put it in this other pile,” Phillip Sweet says.

Ultimately, that meant they finished the CD in record time.

“By the end of that, we listened back and we were like, ‘Wow, this record is pretty close to done’,” Phillip remembers. “So, in about three weeks really it had been mixed and mastered and all the overdubs were done. It was fast. It was like a tornado!”

Little Big Town’s CD, appropriately titled Tornado, storms stores Tuesday.
