When Kix Brooks started recording his new solo CD, it looked like it might be a very Cajun-sounding album, influenced by the music of his native Louisiana.
“‘Moonshine Road’ was the first thing that I cut that I really loved for this record,” he recalls. “You know, a part of me just wanted to go there and stay there and just get swampy. As I wrote a lot of songs in that direction, it started feeling kind of redundant to me.”
So Kix expanded his vision to include several different styles of music, from straight-ahead country, even to rock.
“I just have so many influences, and I like all different kinds of music,” he says. “Maybe, hopefully, there’s some common thread that runs through this music. It’s just sort of the way I’ve always played and listened and written. I don’t know if it’s versatile or schizophrenic,” he quips.
In the end, Kix says the fans at his live shows seem to get the diverse sounds on the new CD.
New to This Town comes out Tuesday, and features Kix’s latest single, “Bring It On Home,” as well as the title track.
