Kellie Pickler shaved her head this week in solidarity with her friend battling breast cancer, Summer Holt Miller. The two have been close since childhood, and Kellie has been standing in support of Summer since she was diagnosed in June. Summer was just 36 years old when she found out she had breast cancer. She credits regular self-examinations and requesting a mammogram with helping her detect the cancer in the early stages.
Kellie says, “Cancer does not discriminate.” Summer adds, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”
Summer has already had a double mastectomy and will begin chemotherapy Thursday.
Kellie and Summer have teamed up with Athena Water to spread the word in the fight against breast cancer. Athena will donate at least $2 million to breast cancer research by 2014. Go to AthenaWater.com to see more on Kellie and Summer’s story.
