Taylor Swift premiered her new video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” on MTV and CMT Thursday night, and you can see it now at MTV.com. The clip was shot in one continuous take with no editing at all.
Taylor tells MTV News, “All the costume changes and scenery changes that you see are done live with the camera just moving around following us. It was like a performance.”
Pulling off her five costume changes in real time on the set meant Taylor had to say goodbye to all modesty. She says, “All my clothes were put together with Velcro and snaps so that I could have like three different outfits layered on top of each other, and that’s how we did the costume changes. So, it was really hectic.”
The feel of the video is a bit surreal with the camera following Taylor through her apartment into a truck and then into the woods all while trying to get rid of her ex-boyfriend. Taylor’s band plays the song throughout the clip while wearing animal costumes and sporting goofy grins on their faces.
“I wanted the video to look as quirky as the song sounds,” Taylor says. “So, you’ll see the apartment is covered in knitting, and there’s just random woodland creatures popping up.”
The video premiere comes as “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” spends a second week atop Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. The single has been downloaded nearly a million times so far, and Taylor says, “It’s all up to the fans whether it has a #1 next to it or some other number. That’s all determined by the fans and how many they decide to buy.” She adds, “I’m absolutely freaking out.”
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is the lead single from Taylor’s fourth album, Red, due out October 22. During her chat with MTV News, Taylor gave a few details on other songs on the album including “I Knew You Were Trouble.”
She says, “It’s really intense, and I’m so excited for people to hear it because it’s about kind of that, you meet someone and you know, ‘Oh, you’re bad. Why am I walking towards you anyway?’ That’s awful!”
In addition to her previously announced duet with British pop star Ed Sheeran, Taylor has a second collaboration on Red with her “absolute favorite band.”
“I want to leave that as a secret too, you know, for closer to when the album comes out or when people can actually get their hands on it,” Taylor says of the duet, “because it’s one of the songs that I’m most excited about on the album.”
Look for Taylor to perform “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” on the MTV Video Music Awards coming up September 6.
