While it may seem as if Taylor Swift has received most every award and honor the music business can bestow, there was one that eluded her, until now: she’s finally scored her first-ever #1 pop hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Of course, it’s no surprise that her new single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” was the one that did the trick. As previously reported, it sold a record 623,000 downloads in its first week, more than any song ever by a female artist. That’s caused the single to rocket from #72, where it debuted last week, into the #1 slot.
On Twitter, Taylor wrote to her fans, “#1 on Billboard’s Hot 100!!?! This has been the most amazing week. I can’t believe how incredible you guys are. (Jumping up and down)”
If you’re shocked to discover that Taylor’s never had a #1 hit before, that’s because she’s scored some massive hits that you might have assumed were chart-toppers. In reality, the highest she’s ever placed a hit has been #2, twice: “You Belong With Me” in 2009″ and “Today Was a Fairytale” in 2010. As for “Love Story” and “Mine,” they only went to #4 and #3, respectively.
