SOUTHERN PINES–Drowning Creek is the primary source of water for Southern Pines, but some say there is not a lot of water to drink. According to the PILOT, the Sandhills Area Land Trust (SALT), a community based non profit that stresses conservation, took the initiative to protect the creek. Through conservation easement, it has preserved eight miles of wetlands, and through coalitions with other groups and government agencies has protected another 12 miles. Ultimately, SALT seeks to foster popular discussion and involvement toward sustainable development.
