This Independence Day, some country stars are taking time out to reflect on their childhood 4th of July celebrations. Others, like Tim McGraw, are thinking about what makes America great. Tim grew up in the very small town of Start, LA, and he didn’t have a lot of advantages as a kid.
Tim says, “I don’t think there’s any other country in the world that I could’ve had the success that I’ve had and come from where I come from.”
— Dierks Bentley travels all over the nation performing for fans, and he even wrote a song about it called “Home.” The people he sees on the road are the reason Dierks believes in the U.S. so much.
He says, “The definition of America to me, you know, getting a chance to travel across the country in a tour bus, stepping upon stages whether it be county fairs, state fairs, arenas, rock bars, the Opry stage, anywhere across this country and looking out at that crowd and seeing people.”
— Luke Bryan isn’t always able to get back home to Georgia to celebrate the 4th of July with his family anymore, but he has a lot of fond memories of celebrating the holiday on the lake.
“I was always kind of in charge of driving home from Tennessee and picking up all the fireworks,” Luke recalls, “and my nieces and nephews always got excited when I rolled in because they knew I had all the fireworks.”
— Eric Church grew up celebrating the 4th of July on the lake back home in North Carolina. Eric and his family would get on a friend’s pontoon boat they tied to other pontoon boats out on the water.
He says, “The adults were having more fun than we were, you know, it was just to go swim in the water and shoot off fireworks — basically, water tailgating is what it was.”
— The Eli Young Band‘s Mike Eli had nine aunts and uncles on his mother’s side, which means family get-togethers were really large once they all brought their kids together. Mike and his family celebrated the 4th of July at his grandparents’ house growing up, and he says, “That house was full of people that’s for sure. Fourth of July was a huge deal in my family.”
