(NEWARK, N.J.) — Officials suspect a number of stowaways may be aboard a cargo ship docked in Newark, N.J., after noises were heard coming from a closed container.
The India-based vessel, identified as the Villa D’Aquarius, left Pakistan earlier this month carrying machine parts to be unloaded in Norfolk, Va. The ship made stops in India, Pakistan and Egypt before stopping in the U.S.
After a routine check of the ship early Wednesday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard said it heard sounds coming from the ship’s hull.
“We heard sounds coming from one of the containers. That is in the hull of the ship, and those sounds are consistent with people being inside,” Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe told ABC News Radio.
The container was buried deep within the ship and there are concerns about the condition of those inside.
