SANFORD–An impressive ceremony signaled the start of the first, ever, Caterpillar Apprenticeship Program in Lee County. According to Superintendent Jeff Moss, it is the only program of this type in North Carolina. The 17 students selected in the welders fabrication program, include 4 females. The students will begin the program in the eleventh grade and will study at the college three days a week and participate in actual on-the-job training, two days a week, and will be paid a salary during the training, and guaranteed a position with Caterpillar once the program is over. The students received their cap and other information in the large yellow and black Caterpillar bag during the ceremony which was held at the plant and and attended by state and local officials, educators and parents.
