SANFORD–There may be at least fifty victims of involuntary sterilization in Lee County. The N. C. Justice for Sterilization Victims foundation says it has now located 132 people in 51 counties who were involved, with the approval of the N. C. Eugenics Board. The foundation is seeking people who were sterilized between 1929 and 1974 as the state prepares to offer compensation. A recently released report shows that at least 51 women were sterilized in Lee County during that time period. No one has come forth. Two have come forth in Chatham County.
