In an interview promoting her new HBO film Hemingway & Gellhorn, Nicole Kidman tells W Magazine what recovering from December vocal surgery was like for husband Keith Urban.
“Three weeks of no sound — no laughing, no coughing, no sneezing, nothing. He could write things down, and he would scribble away.”
Nicole jokes that Keith’s vocal restrictions didn’t keep the two from bickering. “You can still fight when someone can’t talk. When he disagreed with me, he would write, ‘This is unacceptable.'”
The Academy Award-winner says that ultimately, the silence brought them closer. “I was there for his first words, and then we cried,” she remembers. “How many people experience their husband’s first words? If that doesn’t bring you closer, you’re not breathing.”
Nicole’s drama about the romance between Ernest Hemingway and a journalist during World War II airs May 28 on HBO. Keith is set to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry this Saturday.
