SANFORD–Local authorities have been dealing with the theft of copper for a long time.  Businesses, churches, power companies, etc. have been victimized by copper theft from air condition units and other devices.  After a search of various codes and state laws, Sheriff Tracy Carter said detectives were able to apply one of the laws to the theft of the coveted material which brings over $3.00 a pound, in most cases.  Effective now, persons transporting over 25 pounds of copper must get a permit from the Sheriff’s office.
