SANFORD–USDA announced in January that it intends to close 259 offices, facilities and laboratories  across the United States, as part of an effort to save about $150 million a year in the agency’s $145 billion budget.  N.C. is slated to lose 6 county FSA offices, one Foods and Nutrition Services office, and three Rural Development offices.  Moore County’s FSA office has been sited for closure.  A February public hearing indicated that Moore County citizens are adamant about keeping their office open.  During the hearing, several suggested that USDA look at closing Lee County’s office, instead.  Local leaders say although Lee County is smaller in size than Moore County, it has the highest number of farms with cropland.
