RALEIGH–The N. C. Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation announced Monday an increase in the number of verified victims sterilized by the state’s former Eugenics Board Program. More than 100 people have been matched to state program records and the foundation is encouraging more people to come forward. In Lee, Harnett, Chatham and Moore counties, a total of 236 sterilizations were performed from July 1946 to June 1968. Fifty of them were in Lee County. As of March 19, no verified victims had come forth from Lee, Harnett or Moore counties. Two victims have come forth in Chatham county. Verification may result in a $50,000 payment. If you believe you are or know someone who may have been affected by the program, you are encouraged to call the toll free hotline at 877-550-6013 or 919-807-4270 for information, or visit the website:www.sterilizationvictims.nc.gov.
