Every American Idol contestant has a song picked out to sing if they get eliminated, and Scotty McCreery chose Tim McGraw‘s hit “Please Remember Me” last season. Of course, he never performed it because he ended up winning the competition.
Now, Scotty’s version of that song has been chosen as this season’s American Idol elimination song. It will be played on Thursday night’s results show when one of the top 13 contestants is sent home.
“I was ecstatic and I’m glad to get to be on there. It’s cool to still be connected to the show every week,” Scotty tells USA Today.
Scotty’s even received Tim’s blessing for his new version. Scotty says, “I sent [McGraw] a little message and told him we just cut it and it was going to be on Idol every week. He said, ‘Oh, man. That’s really cool. I’m sure you nailed it.’ He gave me some good feedback.” Scotty’s version of the song will be available on iTunes Thursday.
Scotty’s runner-up from last season, Lauren Alaina, is set to perform on Thursday’s American Idol results show too. It starts at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
